A message left on the top railing facing the sun rising.

Very rarely have I seen the sunrise, unless of course I've stayed up all night.

So I trekked up this mountain (after three years in Florida, a small hill looks like Mount Everest) this morning to try and catch some pictures of the sunrise.

Abe Lincoln happens to be my favorite President, so I was easily sidetracked by this historic rock.

I had to climb up to get a good view. The climb up is fine, but the steps are small, coming down was a little nerve racking.

Daisy, my trusty chocolate lab, was the only member of my family willing to join me for the race to capture a sunrise.

Nothing much is going on here.

I graduated from Flagler College in three years, with two degrees. I have spent the past month with little to do, and subsequently nothing to photograph. For this assignment I took picture of two Flagler College students, Lindsey Mountz, 22, and Elaine Damasco, 20. The pictures were taken at the San Lorenzo Cemetery, in St. Augustine, FL. I edited all of these photos in iPhoto, adjusting the saturation, contrast, highlights and shadows, as well as adding effects.

The Economy's Impact on Animals

In October of 2008, the St. Augustine Humane Society shelter at 1665 Old Moultrie Road, closed down due to rising costs in a poor economy. Since then, the St. Johns County Pet Adoption and Holding Center has seen increased rates of homeless animals and are facing overcrowding. At the shelter the number of volunteers is down, and without volunteers many of the animals are stuck in their cages all day. Nick Fronczak and I went there to document the issue.

The St. Johns Pet Adoption and Holding Center sees almost double the amount of cat to dogs in a year. Due to overcrowding, many of these cats will have to be euthanized.

This assignment was to take photographs of an event at night. I love the night life in big cities, but St. Augustine doesn't have much to offer after dark. Needing something to do, I caved in and bought a ticket to see Junior Boys at Cafe Eleven on Anastasia Island.

It was a great show, but my camera was acting up. I spent most of the time I should have been taking photographs tinkering with my aperture and shutter speed. Add to that a bunch of strobe lights and a fog machine and the shots were a little rough.

I really hate "self-portraits" or any assignment where I am supposed to describe myself, in either words or images. I have nothing profound to say here. I already posted an old attempt at a self-portrait for my class, but figured I should do something different after hearing more about the project.

So, if I ever go missing or end up on the FBI's most wanted list the media can pull my photo off here instead of a dated facebook picture.

I started the process by playing with lighting and head shots. Pretty much I stood in my pitch dark living room with a side lamp pointed right at my face and the camera on a tripod, my roommate was a little concerned when she walked in on the process.

Here are my favorite ones from that:

They are a lot a like (then again, how different can head shots of the same person get?) but the lighting was different and I got to play around with the effects. In the end I kind of enjoyed the project.

Race for the Cure

I was really lucky to be the "official volunteer photographer" for the Race. In other words - I took all of their photos and didn't get paid, but it was worth it. Everyone there was so high energy and it was a lot of fun!

The Race was PACKED.

Environmental Portrait of a Beekeeper

St. Augustine, artist and beekeeper, Gayle Prevatt

started beekeeping when she planted fruit trees in her yard

and realized they were not getting pollinated.

The bees were producing so much honey, Prevatt had to take the top two small sections off to add a new tier to the hive. In the winter time the honey is a little bit sour and therefore left in the hive for the bees to eat instead of being harvested.

Once the new tier was in place the slides that go into it had to be covered with honey from the hive so the bees would move up into the new section.

Extras:

Looking for the Queen bee.

Starting the fire, to spread smoke into the hives before opening them. The smoke calms the bees so they don't swarm Prevatt while she checks the hives.

Our "Environmental Portrait" assignment was a hard one to visualize. It was supposed to be someone at work or home, in that environment. I tried calling a couple of places to take pictures, and the first one I got on the phone was Two Son Farm, in St. Augustine, Fl. When I looked them up I had googled a 'cattle ranch,' but there were no cattle at the Two Son Farm.

Highlights of the night from my notebook:

5:00 pm: Deputy Sheriff Chris Collins picks me up in front of the Sheriff's Office in St. Augustine. We will be spending the night patrolling West King.

5:10 pm: Stop at a conveneince store on West King. 1/3 of the people leave when the vehicle parks out front. 1/3 leave when they see Collins exit the vehicle. The rest peace out when they see my camera.

5:27 pm: Traffic Stop. College student isn't wearing her belt. Let go; No ticket. Radio Jargon is confusing... Collins has a "1012" and won't be eating dinner with his cop friends.

5:58 pm: We park behind the fire station so Collins can catch up with other officers. I am worried about being disappointed on the action front.

6:14 pm: Disappointment slightly eased: Reported Runaway.

6:20 pm: I realize that the "1012" is me. Radio talk is confusing. Runaway is really at Uncles and just doesn't want to go home. Sigh.

6:23 pm: Still dealing with hysterical mom. Car is freezing, windows and dashboard have accumulated "dew." No longer worried about gunshot wound, may freeze to death.

6:30 pm: Disappointment over: Reported Knife Fight. Collins drives 85 down a 35 zone. May be in heaven.

6:40 pm: Woman has a steak knife in purse. Arrested.*

6:50 pm: Left alone in car with woman. Her purse and steak knife are at my feet. Worried about getting stabbed by the evidence.

7:00 pm: Still alone with woman. She keeps chanting "Oh god no, I just got out of jail, oh god no." Where is Collins?

7:15 pm: Drop woman off at jail. I'm really going to miss her. Evidence falls between my seat and the console. Nothing like TV.

7:30 - 9 pm: Routine checks on license plates, bike stops for no lights. Mildly exciting. Driving has gotten worse, may be sick.

9:15 pm: Biker stopped for not having lights. Refuses to remove hands from pockets. Throws something into the bushes. Gets slammed into car. I decided to stay in vehicle until needed.

9:25 pm: Not needed.

9:56 pm: Radio: Fight in 'the projects.' Turns out Precious didn't like another girl. They rumbled. Lost weave discovered at the scene of the crime. 10 to 15 women outside. Lots of yelling. No arrest.

11:30 pm: See red pickup truck. Run tags. Stolen. Man tries to ditch us by driving into a driveway. Homeowners demand he moves car, he does not live there. Arrest.*

11:40 pm: Man smells. Turns out he is homeless and happy to spend the night in jail.

12:15 pm: Collins does paperwork on Arrested man. Car reeks, I am no longer having fun.

12:30 pm: Man's wife rides by on a bike. Collins is still processing paperwork, allows man to have the window down after the woman promises to behave.

12:40 pm: Misbehavior. They start kissing through the window. Collins is oblivious. I want out.

1:05 pm: Man goes to prison and I go to my car. Epic Night.

*Notice: The people have been arrested, but have not been found guilty of a crime in a court of law.

Ride Along: St. John's Sheriff Department

This past Friday, I got to go on a ride along with Deputy Sheriff Chris Collins. It was an amazing experience and one I was lucky enough to be allowed to document. I am very thankful to the St. Johns County Sheriff's department and the Deputy Sheriffs involved. I would do this every weekend if I could!

A small town between Veliky Novgorod and Moscow.

They are re-building all the old churches in Russia that were destroyed during communist rule. They are absolutely gorgeous. Allie Collopy, of Durham, NH, covers her head in respect while visiting one monastery.
